Selecting A Roofing Contractor

Whether you own your own home, or decide to build a new home, at some point you will have to have a new roof installed. Here are several questions to ask when choosing a company to re-roof your existing home, or install the first roof on your new home.

How To Choose a Roofing Contractor

1. How long has the company or contractor been in business?

Most companies who have been in business for several years, or even decades, have done so because they have provided excellent products and services. They also have the experience to know what to do in all situations

2. Does the contractor have a permanent business address and contact information?

It’s easy for someone to buy a few tools and start to provide a roofing service to the public. It also just as easy for them to cease business practices and never be heard from again. Make sure that the company you hire has made the effort to become a permanent, stable business, who will be around if you ever have a problem in the future.

3. Is the company a member in good standing with the Better Business Bureau?

The Better Business Bureau is an excellent way to research potential contractors. You can find out what each company is rated and how well they deal with any complaints that may arise.

4. Is the company a member of local and national industry associations?

A well-established contactor should be a member of trade associations. Jayson Global Roofing are members of; The Edmonton Construction Association, The Canadian Construction Association, The Canadian Home Builder’s Association Edmonton Region, and The National Roofing Contractors Association, to name a few.

5. Does the roofing company also do work for other reputable companies in the area?

Check to see if the roofing contractor also does work for various home builders, construction, property management and insurance companies in the area. Good relationships with other companies will show that the company is reputable and trustworthy.

6. Does the company provide a free, written, no-obligation estimate?

Did you receive a price scribbled on a napkin or was the re-roofing estimate clearly written or typed in a professional manner, describing exactly what is outlined in the job scope. Make sure that you fully read and understand the accompanying terms and conditions before proceeding with any job estimate.

7. Does the company have adequate workers compensation insurance and a proper, comprehensive safety program?

If the contractor does not treat job safety seriously, they will not treat your roof and property seriously, either. A roofing company should have adequate liability insurance, as well as a recognized safety program that meets established standards set by the Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Board.

8. Are they certified installers of the products that they offer?

Today’s roofing products are designed to work as a system together. This includes the Shingles (or other exposed roofing material), eave and valley protection, underlay material, recommended flashings, and adequate venting. A roofing contractor should not only know how and why to install the parts of the system, but they should be certified by the manufacturer to do so. Jayson Global Roofing is fully certified by GAF, the largest shingle manufacturer in North America. We are the only company in the Edmonton region who can offer their best warranty, the Golden Pledge.

10. Does the company have a Quality Control process in place to ensure that your roof is done correctly?

Today’s roof systems must be installed by properly trained personnel. Ask how potential roofing companies monitor their trade’s workmanship. Every project that we complete has a thorough estimate done by one of our quality control specialists, ensuring that products are installed according to local building codes, manufacturer’s system requirements, and our own strict standards.

11. Can you obtain references of past work?

Past performance is indicative of what you can expect on your roofing project. A good company that does excellent work should have no trouble providing past references when asked. A large percentage of our new business clients are referred to us by a past customer who was happy with our service.

Remember: the roof is one of the most important systems in the home. It protects the contents inside, as well as you and your loved ones. Be thorough in your research of prospective contractors.
